The education of the youth of Lexington and Henderson County is taken very seriously by residents. Henderson County Schools, with 3,400 students and the Lexington City System, with 1,000 students, provide quality learning opportunities for the areas young people. The Lexington City School System has two facilities, Paul G. Caywood School, with classes for grades K-5 and Lexington Middle School with classes for 6-8. The system is a special school district administered by a director and a school board elected by the citizens of Lexington. The Henderson County School System is a consolodated system administered by a superintendent and a school board elected by popular vote. Vocational education classes, programs for the mentally disabled, and free bus transportation are provided by the country's schools.
